What’s Amino?

Amino is a social network that can be downloaded on a Chromebook.
Amino is a social network at its core.

Amino is a social network developed by Narvii Inc. It’s a popular app that’s rated 4.7/5 stars on iOS and similarly on Google Play at the time of this writing.

Amino lets you chat with people who have similar interests.

The app calls them “Communities” and you can choose and join from a wide variety of them.

From a quick glance at their homepage, I saw communities for movies, games, TV shows, sports, art, music, and more. You can join communities that you’re interested in and then chat with people within that group.

Amino also has public and private chat options, along with other basic social network functions such as posting threads, videos, pictures, polls, real-time chats, emojis, likes, wikis, sharing, and more. It’s free to sign up and free to use with in-app purchases.

Does Amino work on Chrome OS?

Yes, it’s possible to get the app on a Chromebook. In fact, there are multiple ways to do this depending on your level of tech-savviness.

You can use the website for the web-based version, use the Play Store app, or use a Chrome extension to enhance your Amino chat experience (by making the chat screen bigger).

We’ll cover all of these methods. Keep reading!

Amino splash screen.
As you can see from their homepage, it’s recommended to download the app. But we’re going to bypass that.

Here we’ll cover the process to actually download and run Amino on Chrome OS.

Depending on how new your laptop is, you can get the app using multiple methods. I’d suggest trying the following methods in order (from easiest to hardest) to save yourself time.

There are a few different ways:

  • Download Amino from the Play Store (requires a newer Chromebook)
  • Use the web-based version
  • Use the Chrome extension

Let’s go over each one and see what works for you.

Download Amino from the Play Store

You can download the official Amino app on your Chromebook through the Play Store.
Amino is readily available on the Play Store.

You can download and install the Amino app from Google Play.

Newer Chromebooks have the Play Store already “built-in” by default.

So that means you can just literally head on over to the store, search for the app, and then download it. It should run on your Chromebook just fine, but you can expect some bugs and glitches here and there.

Chrome OS has the ability to download and run Android apps on your Chromebook, but the feature is new. Thus, it doesn’t work perfectly and you should expect some problems here and there.

Regardless, here’s how to download Amino on your Chromebook, step-by-step:

  1. Click on the Launcher at the bottom-left of your screen, or hit the “Finder” key on your keyboard. It looks like a magnifying glass or “search” button.
  2. Find the Play Store and launch the app.
  3. In the Play Store, search for “amino social network” and find the official app. Or you can just click here to go there directly.
  4. Download and install Amino.
  5. After it’s done downloading, click on the Launcher once again. You should see “Amino” show up on the list of installed apps.
  6. Click on it to run it.
  7. Sign in with your account or register a new one.

That’s it!

Please note that only newer models can actually run Android apps directly. If you see a message that says “You have no devices” or something similar, it means either your Chromebook model doesn’t have the capability to download Play Store apps.

If you’re using different computers to install apps, you need to be using the same Google Account to download them.

Don’t have the Play Store?

If you have an older model, you can force the Android update. It’s slightly technical, but I wrote a detailed tutorial on getting the Android app update you can follow along.

As long as your specific Chromebook is scheduled to get the update sometime in the future, you should be able to “rush” the update manually.

Not all models will be getting this update- only select ones according to a list (which is in the tutorial). So check it out.

Use the web version of Amino

Website version of Amino.
Amino also has a web-based version online that works on Chromebooks.

You can log on to the web-based version of Amino if you don’t want to download the app. There used to be no web-based version, but a while back the developers created one.

So now Amino has a website that you can logon to and chat with others in your communities.

You can access their site from any device that has a modern web browser (iPad, Android, iPhone, PC, Mac, Linux, etc.) and sign in to your account online.

The Amino site is https://aminoapps.com/.

From there, just click the “Sign in” option at the right and you can access all your communities and chat!

Amino Chrome extension

Amino extension for Chrome.
And there’s a full-screen chat extension.

This isn’t really a technique to logon, but rather something you may find useful if you use the web-based version of Amino.

As you know, the chat mode is pretty small and hard to see. This Chrome extension makes the chat full screen so it’s easier on the eyes.

Nothing special, but does come in handy especially on smaller Chromebooks (unless you have one with a large screen). This is a pretty useful enhancement extension!

You can download the Amino extension on the Play Store.

How do you send messages with Amino?

You can start a chat by clicking on one of your Community subscriptions on the side menu.

Just click on the Community of your choice, then click “Create” to start a public or private chat. Amino is already really easy to use, but if you have questions, you should check out their support page.

You can privately chat with any user within the group.

Sending messages through Amino on a Chromebook is no different than the phone app. The layout just changes a bit. You can create a message by clicking Community > Create > Private Chat. This will let you compile a message to a specific user in private. You can also send a public chat which will be seen by everyone.

How do you leave a chat on Amino?

Just click on the options menu and then hit “Leave Conversation” to exit the chat.

Is amino a safe app?

Amino is both a social network where users can communicate over a variety of topics.

Because there’s nothing you can do to control what others say, there’s always the chance of a troll to show up- let alone rude remarks, inappropriate language, and other things that are looked down upon.

Amino is rated for users at least 12 years of age at the time of this writing. Consider using parental guidance to monitor your kid’s usage of the app.

If you’re a parent thinking about letting your child use Amino, you should read reviews and always consider the possibility of users trolling and harassing others, or abusing the platform.

Here are some pages you can check out that may be helpful:

Can you get Amino on a computer?

Amino runs no problem on most modern devices.

Yes, you can download Amino on any modern device with a modern browser.

From my research, Amino has apps that run on computers, laptops, tablets, phones, and even TVs.

Amino also supports a variety of operating systems such as Chrome OS, iOS, Android, PC (Windows), and Mac.

So it’s definitely possible to get Amino on a computer or laptop.

    • Hey there,

Are you able to find the Amino version you’re using? Are you able to verify that you’re on the latest version? I’ll download it and look into this to see if I can replicate- sounds like it could be some glitch between the Chrome OS/Android versions.

Let me know if you’re able to get the version number.
      Thanks.

  7. I have a Samsung chromebook, not sure exactly which model, but it’s one with the stylus and you can bend the screen to make it a laptop or a tablet. Amino downloaded just fine, it let me open it, but whenever I open it, it says ‘Error! your device is currently not supported or is outdated. Please update to the newest version.’ The app goes fullscreen, but the visible part of the app is only a small area about the size of a phone. I’m not sure if this is because I have a tablet-computer, or because it’s a Samsung chromebook. Does anyone have any advice on what’s going on with it? Thanks!
